What We Are Learning At Preschool…

We had a very exciting week once again! We talked about President’s Day and learned about Abraham Lincoln. In math center, this week we measured ourselves against Abraham Lincoln to compare how tall we were to him. We learned that President Obama is 6ft. 1 in. in height. It was so much fun to see how we measured up! (Check it out in the hallway) We also discussed George Washington and made a portrait of him! We discussed our coins and learned that President Washington and Lincoln are on our coins. We did coin rubbings, too! Most exciting was our “Preschool Store”. Oh what fun we had! Miss Allison was here to help us shop! (She is Mrs. Pemperton’s daughter who is our Special Ed. Teacher) Allison was here for a Shadow Day. She had a great time spending her day with your children and maybe someday she will be a Preschool Teacher, too! Good Luck to Allison!  Ask your children what they bought at our store. It was really difficult to choose items because there were lots to choose from. They had 10 pennies to spend and they tried to make the best choices. We tried to get them to save their pennies, but we did not have any luck! They are “big” spenders!
This week we worked on the Letter Mm, the sound and formation of the letters. Please continue to practice at home. Have fun looking for words that begin with M. See how many words you can find and highlight in the

newspaper.  Next week we will be working on the letter Pp and learning all about Dinosaurs. Our word for the week is” Prehistoric”.

Looking Ahead…

This will help you to see what your child is struggling with and we can work together for the benefit of your child. Have fun!

Weather…As the cooler days are approaching, please remember to dress your children for the weather. We do try to go outside most days, weather permitting. If you do send your child to school in boots, also send in a change of shoes. Often times, the children find the boots are too warm to wear when they are inside the school building. Also, please label all coats, hats, and mittens with your child’s name. It’s time to switch out your child’s extra pair of clothes in their backpacks to warmer clothing. Thank you!

God Bless, Mrs. Fenik

What We Are Learning At Preschool…

What a wonderful week we had as we finished up learning about nutrition. In art center, we made groundhog shadows, a mouth full of “white” teeth and a toothbrush. We also discussed taking care of our teeth and how important it is to brush at least twice a day. We played a fun math game with a paper mouth and marshmallows. The children had to roll the dice and add that many marshmallow “teeth” to their mouth. This game will also come home today for all to enjoy. It was lots of fun!  We did a fun experiment to see what would happen if we did not brush our teeth. We had 3 eggs and put them in pop, coffee, and vinegar. We got to see how brown our teeth would be if we drank a lot of pop and coffee and didn’t brush our teeth. And, the egg that was in the vinegar had no shell! The vinegar ate away the shell(just like the enamel on our teeth) and the egg felt like rubber. We made a promise to brush our teeth and care for our teeth with our parents help!
Our Science lesson this week was a focused on shadows. We learned some facts about the groundhog and heard he did not see his shadow. Maybe an early spring? The boys and girls had fun making their own shadows using their flashlights and an object they picked to work with. Thank you to Mr. Jonovich for sending in our spheres so we could make sterrographic projections. What fun to watch a circle turn into a square shape.

This week we worked on the Letter Dd, the sound and formation of the letters. Please continue to practice at home. Have fun looking

for Letter D words in the newspaper or old magazines. Next week we will work on the Letter Vv. Our theme for the week will be Valentine’s Day/ Feelings.

Looking Ahead…
·         No School… on Monday, Feb. 15 in honor of President’s Day.

·         It’s our 50th Day of School on Monday, February 8. The children are very excited for this special day. Please have your child dress-up as they grew up in the 50’s. BE CREATIVE!!! We are in need of some help to make this day a success. If you are able to help please let me know.  We are in need of vanilla ice cream and root beer pop so we can make root beer floats. Please email me if you can help (cfenik@stmaryvermilion.org). We need this for both am/pm classes. Thanks!

·         Homework Backpacks have begun! Please have fun! These backpacks are for you to help your child with areas of development that may be more difficult and continue to practice areas of development that you have mastered. Please remember to return all items from the bag so we can send these bags home with another student. Each child will have a chance to take home all backpacks.

·         We are making a Family Recipe Book with the children next week to finish our nutrition unit. We are asking each family to share one of their favorite recipes! Please send your recipe in on Monday, Feb. 8.

What We Are Learning At Preschool

We had a “tasteful” week of learning about Nutrition and how important it is to EAT healthy. We discussed eating a rainbow of foods which will help us to eat healthy foods. The children colored a plate of 6 different colors. They brought home 6 clothespins which are to be used when they eat one of the colored foods on their plate they put a clothespin on the matching color. This reminds them to eat their fruits and vegetables. Each night they can remove the clothespins and begin a new day. Please help to encourage them to make good healthy choices and as always remember to have fun and be CREATIVE!
We will continue learning more about our Food Groups and we will be doing some cooking in our classroom next week. We worked on the sound and formation of the Letter Nn this week. The children are doing well, but need to practice at home as well. This will help them to retain what we are working on at school. Please continue to work on their homework at home and remember to start your letters top to bottom. Thank you.
